Join Dr. David Einstein, ranked by Newsweek among the nation’s top prostate cancer oncologists, for an update on prostate cancer screening that goes beyond the USPSTF “Grade C” recommendation. Dr. Einstein leads the BIDMC Genitourinary Medical Oncology program (now integrating into Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) and co-chairs the Harvard Cancer Center Prostate Working Group. Joined by a urologic surgeon, he will review modern approaches that reduce over-diagnosis and over-treatment, including MRI-based biopsy triage and active surveillance for low-risk disease, plus updated evidence from major screening trials. Dr. Einstein will address ten common patient myths about prostate cancer and discuss how clinicians shape patient preferences in shared decision-making. The session offers practical guidance on interpreting PSA values in the context of prostate size, BPH, and other benign causes of PSA elevation.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe modern paradigms that reduce over-diagnosis and over-treatment in prostate cancer screening, including MRI-based biopsy triage and active surveillance for low-risk disease.
- Interpret PSA values in the clinical context of prostate size, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and other benign causes of PSA elevation to guide appropriate evaluation and referral.
- Summarize updated evidence from major prostate cancer screening trials, including the risks and benefits of screening.
- Apply practical strategies to communicate nuanced risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening and management options, including active surveillance, with patients.
